What is the evidence ABA therapy works?

ABA therapy is a nationally accepted and approved form of treatment for autism by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the Surgeon General of the United States (1)

The Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health, based on 30 years of research, finds ABA therapy effective in “reducing inappropriate behavior and in acquiring language skills, increasing communication, ability to learn, and appropriate social behavior” early in life.

Over 20 studies have established that intensive and long-term therapy using ABA principles improves outcomes for many children with autism. “Intensive” and “long term” refer to programs that provide 25 to 40 hours a week of therapy for 1 to 3 years. These studies show gains in intellectual functioning, language development, daily living skills and social functioning. (Autism Speaks, 2)

What is the benefit of ABA therapy?

ABA therapy with a board certified therapist can help children who are on the autism spectrum develop a range of communication skills and grow emotionally and socially. The learning goals are based on the age and abilities of a child and results vary by situation. Various studies of ABA therapy show documented improvements in the following areas:
  • Increased focus when studying
  • Improved connections with friends and family
  • Fewer tantrums and self-harm behaviors
  • More effective communication with strangers
  • Asking for items clearly
  • Understanding of personal space and physical contact
The length of treatment varies from child to child, however the average maximum treatment length is three years. Generally, ABA therapy is seen to be a pathway to improve behavior, social skills, and quality of life for the patient.

Is ABA therapy covered by insurance?

ABA therapy is typically funded by most insurance companies when therapy is medically necessary, although the insurance coverage is different in each state. Medicaid will cover ABA therapy when a doctor prescribes ABA therapy as a medically necessary intervention for persons under 21.
